In the heart of the Netherlands, a nation defined by its maritime mastery, Azure Yacht Design has emerged as one of the world’s most respected independent design and engineering studios. For more than two decades, the firm has blended creativity with technical expertise to shape yachts that are as emotionally resonant as they are structurally advanced.
From pioneering explorer vessels such as La Datcha and Anawa to sculptural icons like Kenshō and Viva, Azure’s portfolio reflects an unwavering pursuit of balance between beauty, performance, and integrity. At Azure, design is never decoration: it is the seamless fusion of imagination and structure, a philosophy that has made the studio a trusted creative partner for owners, shipyards, and industry leaders worldwide. We spoke with shareholders and directors Erik Spek and Onne Logger to learn more about how this vision shapes their work.

Every yacht starts as a dream, a sketch, an idea. What’s your process at the very beginning?
ONNE LOGGER: Every yacht begins with a vision, a personal story waiting to take form. Our process starts through dialogue, by listening carefully to how each client imagines life at sea: the journeys they dream of, the way they entertain, and the moments of calm they seek on board. From these conversations, we develop the first spatial studies, examining proportion, perspective, and movement through each space. It’s a process that blends intuition with precision, where emotion meets engineering until the layout feels effortless and balanced. Once that harmony is found, the exterior form naturally follows. Collaboration guides every step. Every line and surface is refined together with the owner to ensure the yacht reflects their personality while staying true to technical feasibility. At Azure, design and engineering grow as one, every curve crafted for elegance, stability, and performance.
Azure combines engineering, interiors, sustainability, and comfort with artistic vision. How do you balance technical precision, functionality, and aesthetics?
ERIK SPEK: True design exists where creativity and logic meet. A yacht’s beauty is inseparable from its structure, and her structure is meaningless without design intent. For that reason, we work as a single integrated team, where designers and engineers collaborate from the first sketch to the final model. Our in-house engineering and naval architecture department is one of our greatest strengths. It brings together specialists in structure, hydrodynamics, and mechanical systems. This expertise gives us freedom. We can design boldly because we understand precisely where the boundaries lie. Each decision is tested for proportion, performance, and buildability until form and function feel inseparable. That equilibrium is what ensures that every Azure yacht is as effortless to live with as it is captivating to behold.
Technology is transforming yacht building. How do you decide when innovation truly improves a project and when it becomes unnecessary complexity?
E.S.: We see technology as a means to achieve clarity, not complication. Innovation has value when it enhances design freedom, simplifies challenges, or delivers a more elegant result aligned with the owner’s vision. We embrace advances that allow cleaner geometries, lighter structures, and more open, seamless layouts, but always with restraint. The most intelligent systems are those that quietly disappear into the background. The most elegant yachts feel effortless precisely because their complexity has been resolved behind the scenes. Progress is not about adding more. It is about making less feel like more, creating yachts that are intuitive, efficient, and timeless.
Strong collaboration between designers, engineers, shipyards, and suppliers, supported by state-of-the-art tools, is what allows us to turn ambitious ideas into reality while keeping solutions intuitive and minimalistic.
Azure has worked on several groundbreaking hybrid and explorer yacht concepts. How do you see sustainability shaping the future of yacht design?
O.L.: Sustainability has evolved from a talking point into a design principle. We see owners genuinely engaged in responsible solutions, not just for compliance but out of awareness.
At Azure, we integrate sustainability from the earliest stage of every project, through efficient hull design, hybrid propulsion, and thoughtful material selection. Real progress, however, depends on collaboration across the industry. Designers, shipyards, and suppliers must work together to reduce environmental impact throughout a yacht’s entire life cycle. Efficiency and sustainability are no longer opposites of luxury. They are its new foundation.

Talking about the emotional side of yachting, what kind of feeling do you hope owners and guests experience on a yacht designed by Azure, and do cultural perspectives change that experience?
O.L.: Every yacht we design is personal, shaped by how its owner imagines life at sea. We aim to create spaces that feel effortless, where every view and movement feels considered.
Working with clients from all around the world naturally exposes us to a rich diversity of cultural perspectives. These differences sometimes influence design priorities, from spatial layouts and social dynamics to the kind of atmosphere each client envisions on board. Some clients prioritize open social decks, others value privacy and calm. Yet across all projects, we aim to evoke a universal emotion: harmony between freedom, comfort, and connection to the sea. For us yacht design is about crafting a way of life at sea. It’s the art of shaping moments: the calm of sunrise on deck, the thrill of adventure on open water, the intimacy of evenings under a wide horizon. Every surface, texture, and spatial transition is conceived to elevate these experiences, allowing owners, guests, and crew to feel both at ease and inspired. Ultimately, our goal is to design not just a vessel, but a setting for memories that endure. Aboard an Azure yacht, we want people to feel both grounded and free, surrounded by craftsmanship , comfort, and a subtle sense of wonder that only life at sea can offer.
Looking back across your projects, do you have a personal favorite, and what makes it stand out?
O.L.: Each project has its own character and philosophy. Explorer yachts such as After You, La Datcha, Pink Shadow, and Anawa express our fascination with capability, combining adventure with refinement. Kenshō offered us the chance to redefine what it means to live at sea. Her fluid, organic forms and sculptural silhouette were born from a philosophy in which every line has purpose. Rather than imposing form on function, the design grew naturally from it, resulting in a yacht that feels alive as though shaped by the sea and wind themselves. With Limerence, our challenge was to combine practicality with poise, merging the capability of a support vessel with the grace of a superyacht. Delivering the storage and functionality of an 80-meter yacht within a 52.5-meter profile demanded precision and creativity, and the result is both purposeful and refined. Our 94-meter Viva represents another defining moment in Azure’s portfolio. Her modern, elongated silhouette, plumb bow, and sweeping lines embody contemporary elegance while maintaining a sense of timeless restraint. She stands as a symbol of innovation, balance, and craftsmanship. Beyond exterior design, we take equal pride in the many projects where we serve as naval architects, structural engineers, and owner’s representatives. Yachts such as Ulysses, Sophia, Kaos, Sakura, Here Comes the Sun, and Tranquillity exemplify our technical rigor and commitment to excellence at every level of yacht creation. Across all our work, what unites these projects is a pursuit of equilibrium between artistry and engineering, creativity and logic, form and experience. When those elements come together, the result transcends time.

How have design and client expectations evolved over the past two decades, and do you think the trend toward larger yachts represents real progress or a shift toward something different?
E.S.: The change has been remarkable. Today’s owners expect a level of precision and customization that was unthinkable twenty years ago. Drawings and technical documentation have multiplied, reflecting both complexity and ambition. This evolution has several important implications. For clients, this means greater control and transparency and it also raises expectations. For designers, it demands a higher standard of excellence. Regarding yacht sizes, while larger yachts continue to attract attention, true progress is measured in intelligence, not scale. Smaller yachts often challenge us to be even more inventive, delivering the same quality within tighter parameters with «out-of-the-box» solutions. In this sense, the shift toward larger yachts may reflect a change in scale and ambition rather than a fundamental advancement in design philosophy or quality. This evolution reflects a shared pursuit of perfection rather than extravagance.
Explorer yachts and long-range vessels are increasingly popular. Does this signal a shift from luxury to experience?
O.L.: Absolutely. The definition of luxury has changed. Today’s owners value experience, authenticity, and freedom. Explorer yachts represent that shift, offering the ability to travel further and live closer to nature, all while maintaining the highest levels of comfort. Modern owners do not simply want to own a yacht, they want to live it. The new luxury is not measured by excess, but by the richness of experience.
What makes Dutch yacht design unique today, and how do mindset, culture, or tradition shape this approach?
E.S.: Dutch yacht design combines centuries of maritime heritage with a modern culture of collaboration. The Netherlands has an exceptional concentration of world-class shipyards, designers, and engineers, all working in a spirit of openness and shared progress. This collective approach fosters constant innovation. Precision, craftsmanship, and technical integrity remain at the heart of every project, while creativity and experimentation push the boundaries of what is possible. E.S.: We are fascinated by how emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, can expand creative potential. AI offers opportunities for greater precision, efficiency, and sustainability, helping us model and optimize designs in new ways. Yet we believe that technology should always serve human creativity, never replace it. The essence of yacht design lies in empathy and understanding, in interpreting an owner’s dreams and emotions. The future we envision is one where innovation and craftsmanship coexist harmoniously. By combining cutting-edge technology with the irreplaceable human touch of our team, we can continue to create yachts that are not only technically advanced but also deeply personal and timeless in their beauty.
Azure Yacht Design continues to chart a course defined by artistry, intelligence, and integrity. In a world where technology and design evolve rapidly, the studio remains anchored by a simple principle: to create yachts that are as emotionally resonant as they are technically exceptional.
